For a while I have been writing on a daily basis, starting from my team blog at theepicforce.com, which we had to take down for technical reasons and now I am here on medium. Medium has always been a wonderful place for learning, it is a community of writers that do deep work to provide solutions. From tutorials, to reviews to self help articles, you can find it all on medium.com or use the mobile App.

If you have been wondering how I write daily, here are some tips to help you get started despite creative block or whatever you may call it.

  1. First write out a list of topics you want to talk about, for me I have a list of over 100 topics and it is expanding daily, although I which to focus on technical topics in future.
  2. Get an accountability partner someone who will keep you accountable to your promise of writing daily, you can also set punishments for when you miss. E.g I have to write 2 extra posts for each day I miss a post. You can make your monetary maybe you have to give the person $10 each time you default.
  3. Find a comfortable space and time, so that your mind can easily think of ideas.
  4. You the draft post feature on medium, sometimes when you fill inspired, you can write more posts and store it up for the days when you aren’t feeling so inspired. I do this a lot.
  5. Equate eating to writing. One of the excuse people give when they can constantly create, is that they don’t have inspiration, but the truth is that you don’t need inspiration to eat, you need to eat. So you can treat writing the same way, you need to write.
  6. Pick topics, questions or problems you want to tackle. The fact is that I am not totally qualified to write about certain topics, but I am certainly qualified to write about my experiences and to reminisce on what they might imply so as to generate a framework for future reference. This is more or less the justification for my writing, find yours.
  7. Share your writing, and get feedback. It can motivate you to write more, although get prepared for criticism both ways.
  8. Make a schedule for when you write, for me it’s in the midnight when my noisy roommates are fast asleep. Yours might be inside a noisy bus, but if it works for you then it works.
  9. Use tools to make it easier. Some of the tools I use o gather my thoughts include google voice keyboard (converts sound to text), notion.so, google docs, google calendar e.t.c.
  10. Read a lot. I read books, articles and listen to podcasts on a daily, it’s part of me now, but from time to time I get to hear some piece of wisdom that inspires my next post.
  11. For a team if you can, working in teams in good for the moral and the friendly competitiveness can keep you going for a long while. It also provides you with people ready to give you honest feedback before you send out your post into the world.
  12. Start small, it’s easy to write 3 paragraph posts daily than 10.

Finally, to be inspired to write daily, you need to listen, observe and take notes, there is a post waiting on almost every surface, look closely. Basically be more attentive to your surrounding environment, a lot is going on that needs writing about, so pick inspiration from there and make a list of topics you want to contend with and then start writing.
